Magneto-Mechanical Metamaterials with Widely Tunable Mechanical Properties and Acoustic Bandgaps

A new magneto-mechanical metamaterial permits great shape and multi-physical property tunability through a novel concept of deformation mode branching. This is achieved through an asymmetric joint design using hard-magnetic soft active materials with the coupled magneto-mechanical actuation. This magneto-mechanical metamaterial design can also be incorporated with the magnetic shape memory polymers for global stiffness tunability, which further increases the achievable bandgap shift. The combination of magnetic and mechanical actuation as well as shape memory effects thus enable broadly tunable properties and can lead to a new paradigm of metamaterials.
